The geography of Northern Ireland means you are never far away from water:

The best coastal waters for sailing include Carlingford Lough, Strangford Lough, Belfast Lough and the Antrim Coast.

For inland sailing, Lough Neagh and Upper & Lower Lough Erne are the two best areas to head for.

Bangor

Bangor marina provides excellent berthing facilities for visitors. Very popular with vistors from Scotland many of whom travel to the biannual Bangor Week. Bangor is also home to Ballyholme and Royal Ulster Yacht Clubs who provide excellent dinghy and keelboat sailing respectively.

Carrickfergus

Situated on Belfast Lough’s northern shore, Carrickfergus provides the right balance of racing, cruising and the social aspects of the sport. The sailing club runs racing from March to September and as a RYA Recognised Teaching Establishment offers beginner's courses. Carrickfergus Marina provides excellent berthing for visitors to the area.

Lower Lough Erne

A perfect venue for trailer-sailors and day trippers. The Lough's shores are lined with slipways, jetties, bars and restaurants. Lough Erne Yacht Club is Ireland’s oldest racing yacht club. A very welcoming and informal club with an active racing and training section. A converted World War II aircraft hanger provides unique storage space for dinghies whilst a marina provides excellent berthing facilities.

Newtownards

Siuated at the North of Strangford Lough, Newtonards boasts an informal and friendly club. Superb dinghy racing is available for all levels of experience. The recently refurbished club house provides a great venue to enjoy the social side of the sport. As a RYA Recognised Teaching Establishment the club provides beginner's courses for adults and children.

North Coast

Northern Ireland's north coast offers great sailing opportunities. There are excellent harbours in Ballycastle, Rathlin Island, Coleraine and Portrush.

There are also a number of charter companies offering both day and overnight trips along the coast and further afield.

Upper Lough Erne

Grid Reference: H345295

A truly rural and unspoilt lough suitable for day sailing but quite compact for larger craft.
