How To Get Started

There are a number of surf schools in Northern Ireland that offer lessons for a range of abilities and provide equipment hire. Beginner's lessons are relatively inexpensive (compared to some other outdoor sports) and are essential if you want to get off to a good start and grasp the basics.

It is important to be a competent swimmer and to be physically fit.

Is It Easy?

Beginner's lessons allow you to develop the basic techniques, making it more likely that you will stay on your feet. Beginners usually start off on dry land to learn the necessary basic techniques, making it easier when you get into the water. Although it can take some time to get on your feet, you will still enjoy the freedom and exhilaration of being out in the ocean with just a board.

Is It Expensive?

The use of beginner's boards and other essential equipment is usually included in the price of a lesson. Lessons can cost as little as £20 for 2 hours and often you can negotiate a good rate for a full week of surf lessons.

Equipment hire is also available for those who no longer feel the need for lessons.

Should you want to purchase your own equipment, a wetsuit and a board are the two main items, but these can also be bought second hand to reduce costs.
